C4015A – Illustrate For Design (Black and White)

The Brief

PRODUCE BLACK & WHITE ILLUSTRATIONS FOR MAGAZINE INSERT

INTRODUCTION

For this unit you will be required to complete two illustration tasks.

Develop two black and white illustrations for a magazine insert for an annual Australian ˜Fifties Fair”.

Conduct thorough research on the 1950’s retro style, the modern interpretation of the 50’s and other spin-off themes such as ˜rockabilly” and ˜vintage”. This research will help direct your illustration, ensuring that you have an accurate understanding of the theme. You should also try to and put your own style and spin on it.

Assessment 1

RENDER A BLACK & WHITE ILLUSTRATION OF HUMAN FIGURE & ANIMAL

This year the Australian Fifties Fair will feature a pet show. To help them promote this your task is to render one illustration representing one of Fifties

Fair attendees with their pet.

This is a new event so they do not have any photo reference so you will have to source an image (s) for yourself. The final illustration must include one human figure and an animal. They requested this particular illustration to be done in black and white.

Assessment 2

RENDER A CARTOON CHARACTER

The second black and white illustration would like you to develop a cartoon mascot for this years event.

This character will be featured in the magazine insert and will also become a part of the integrated visual system designed for the event.

You will need to create your own character echoing traditional 1950’s cartoon characters popular during the era. The style of the character needs to be kitsch, dramatic, tongue-in-cheek, lighthearted and eye-catching. On the next page are some examples of the kinds of cartoons that you can use to guide you in terms of style. Note: that these are for inspiration only, your artwork must be original.

Allocated Time: 7 weeks or 42 hours.
